A Year In The Eastern Time Zone

After living in the Central Time Zone all my life, it has taking some getting used to living the Eastern Time Zone. Even after a year, I'm not quite sure I'm completely used to it.

For the most part, everything is pretty normal, until you get to watching TV.

Watching the news at 11pm here is just crazy! I rarely stay up that late just to see who got shot in my 'hood

Most of the people I know are still.... on Central time.

Letterman and Leno starts at 11:35, I refer back to the news starting at 11pm... No late night funny for me.

Primetime TV shows start late at 8pm and run into 10pm. Well, I actually kinda like that, since the kids are in bed by 8pm... No disturbances!

I'm looking forward to the time change this weekend, falling back an hour will be like living on Central time again! If TV shows would just move back an hour with me.

Life is Short, Have a Bucket

On the 10th anniversary of 9/11, we think about the tragedy of the event... how horrific it was to lose all those people... all the brave men and women that died to rescue survivors. We also look at our own mortality, and realize that we have become complacent in our own lives... we haven't loved enough, lived enough, and done all the things we wanted to do yet. We remember that life is short, that everyday is a gift, and there are no guarantees.

When is the last time you looked at your life with a magnifying glass and asked yourself, 'what do I want?' It's so easy to get caught up in serving others at work, at home with family and kids, and often forget about the most important person in your life... YOU! ...and probably have never thought about the things, no matter how off the wall it is... things you've always wanted to do, but haven't yet? Got an answer? Then, go do it... solo or share your experience with family, or close friends.

I've kicked around things in my head for years about things I want to do in life, I finally started a bucket list of my own. ::Check it out here::

What is it that you want to do before it's all said and done? Have you made that list? The list of things you want to do before taking a dirt nap? There are no guarantees for tomorrow... Get busy, and live.

I ask myself that too sometimes... As a traveling radio guy, you probably thought I ran off to another circus somewhere. I'm proud to say, that I'm still in the Ft. Myers three ring radio circus and rockin' it! Here's what I've been up to lately the past month since I blogged last:

(Trying to) Avoiding speed traps...

Having (adult) beverages with good friends...

...and enjoying trips to Walmart with my family...

So, as you can see, I've been pretty tied up... but good news is I have lots of blog ideas ready to go for your reading enjoyment coming soon.

My Buzz (Cut) Is Fading

Male pattern baldness is a cruel joke given to us by our parents. There is no cure for it, and there is no way to naturally change it. I used to have a TON of thick, curly hair, but at 18, and it seemed like it all fell out at once. It didn't really bother my too much since I wore a ball cap everywhere; not to cover it up, but because working in radio really doesn't have a dress code and it was comfortable.

As I got older, it was time to grow up and lose the hat, and I had figure out what to do with my (lack of) hair. I buzzed my head with clippers with the '#1' guard on it. Hey! It was a big step for me! That was 2007. My hair continues to thin out and I'm at another cross roads: Is it time to just shave it all with a razor?

Good Grief!

A couple of 'bald brothers' at work do it, and it looks good on them... but I'm hesitant to do it....and not because I'm holding on to what's left... well, that's a small piece of it, but mostly it's because I have this odd-shaped, Charlie Brown-sized head. It's big! What is my big ol' noggin gonna look like without any hair on it? So I started Google-ing how to shave my head, and came across a few videos that wouldn't work, but I was happy to find a some cool products for those follically challenged.

Maybe I will shave it all, maybe not... but if I do go all the way, I want to change my name to Kojak!

Caution When Cruising

You could see it in the other parents' eyes... that the 'relaxing vacation' on a cruise ship with their kids... wasn't going to be so relaxing.

My wife and I decided to take a week on a Carnival Cruise with all three kids in tow. Trale 9, Mason 6, and Kyli 22 months. We knew ahead that we would have to tow Kyli everywhere we went because she was under two years old. The age threshold for the Carnival Kids Camp is 2 and up. So for parts of the day, Trale and Mason got to hang out with other kids for some fun activities and have a vacation too away from Mom and Dad!

Anybody with young children knows how easy it is for them to get bored even minutes after doing something fun. Being stuck on a boat, stuffed in a small cabins often sparked the 'bored' phrase more than I wanted to hear. Having to tote a little one around too made it difficult to see any of the adult sit down events which also provoked a 'bored' from me too from time to time.

The excursions turned out to be a nice release from the cruise ship doldrums. Getting to visit Grand Cayman and Mexico was a real treat, but I wanted to spend more time on land seeing the sights. You were whisked away for the excursion as soon as you stepped off the boat, by the time you returned, there was no time left to really experience the true culture of the town and you end up stuck in the port tourist traps with shops and restaurants I can visit anytime back home.

At every turn, somebody from the ship was taking our picture... even before we took one step onto the ship, we were pulled over and our picture taken. Of course, the cruise ship wants you to buy the picture later for $20!! When we got off the boat, a picture snapped... as we were eating...SNAP... outside on the deck. 'CLICK'...walking back to the ship all sweaty and nasty from the excursion....SNNNAAPPP! I think our picture was taken more times than if we were walking into a bank to rob it.

We did have some fun on the boat, but there were just too many little things that overshadowed the great stuff on board: Cabins that were too hot, spaghetti at the Mexico excursion, too little time at port, no daycare for little babies, $6+ Beer...oh and all the damn pictures... It was just too much.

Not saying, not to take a cruise, because for the most part, this trip was a good time. But for what it's worth...here's my two cents: If you want to see the world and cruise, do it with older children. Look for cruises that allow more time at port to get the most out of the towns you are visiting, read reviews of the excursions before booking... and don't jump off the boat, even if you really want to.

Country Jam: The New Cats Of Country

This week, we got to give our listeners a little treat with a free show with a few of the newest country stars. We called it the "New Cats Of Country" with Thompson Square, Sunny Sweeney, James Wesley, and Steel Magnolia. It was acoustic, and in the round... for my Texas readers... a la 'Ten Man Jam' style. It was a magical event like never before in SW Florida. It was a blast to put together and listeners filled the seats! Check out a few of the pics! Mason Graduates Kindergarten

2 out of 3 of my kids have now graduated kindergarten. Mason, through 4 different kindergarten classes, made it through to the first grade. Yes... 4 schools in one year. It's partially my fault for moving cross country, and partially Lee County schools fault for having a jacked up enrollment system.

Sorry buddy for making you switch schools so many times this year. Good job little man, you are so smart and you make me and Mom very proud.

Don't Mess With Darius

A few weeks back the radio station hosted a country concert with Darius Rucker... we went backstage and got to meet Darius with some of our listeners and noticed this BIG black guy that was never more than a few feet away from Darius... we figured he was the body guard... at one point yelled at some people standing in line. We all joked that "we didn't want to mess with that guy." We were right... press play below and see what happens to this guy at a show in Boca Raton that got too close during the show... it all goes down around 1:13 into it.

Did you ever start watching a show wayyyy after everybody else was already into it, then you have to play catch up? I'm that way, but I take it one step further... after I start watching a show, they tend to disappear... at least, for a little bit.

24 was a huge show on Fox that I started watching in the middle of season six... and got hooked instantly... then I had to wait a year for Season 7, due to a writers strike. Then Season 8 ends up being the last season of the series!

Last year, I started to watch Mad Men. It was already season 4, and after watching the first episode, I decided to rent the previous seasons to catch up... So, after season 4 ends, and I become a huge superfan, season 5 gets DELAYED until 2012... sound familiar? Let's just hope Mad Men doesn't call it quits after season 6.

Clicking through and checking out some music videos today, I came across Joe Nichols' "The Shape I'm In." I press play, and see a familiar face on my screen... I'm thinking, "Hey, I know that fella." It's Marcus Luttrell! We grew up in the same neighborhood in Willis, Texas during my jr. high and high school years. I lost touch with Marcus, but knew he went on to do great things with the Navy SEALs and kept up with him through the grapevine of friends. He's retired from service now, but you'll see him on book tours, speaking engagements, the movie coming up soon about his time serving our country in Iraq and Afghanistan...oh! And music videos too. Happy New Year!! ...and a new decade underway! I had a thought that woke me out of a dead sleep this morning. At the end of this decade, in 2020, my oldest son Trale will be 18 and graduating high school. I'm noticing everyday how he is getting older and becoming more independent. Yesterday, when we went on a little geocaching/exploring the new town adventure, Trale opted out and went with his friend to a picnic. I couldn't believe that he would pick his friend over some treasure hunting... sheesh! :) He is getting older, and my time with him when he grows up and moves on is getting shorter. After my sulking that my little boy is growing up... all of us except Trale explored Naples today. I wanted to go to the Naples Pier and hit a few geocaches on our way.

Not that school... THAT school over there!

The move to Florida so far has been all gumdrops and rainbows... until it was time to get the kids into school. Lee County, Florida has this thing called 'school choice.' A brilliant idea (result of a lawsuit) where you can *pick* the school you want to go to; as opposed to going to the school that's closest to your house. You can probably imagine what happens... We move from Louisiana, we get a nice house in a nice neighborhood, near a nice school...and oops! That school across the street is full! OK, how about the nice school a few miles away... FULL! OOKKKK, so the 10th school choice later there is an opening. It is 40 minutes away from our nice house, in the nice neighborhood, across the street from the nice school. It wasn't much of a "school choice" was it?

It's bad enough we had to move 1500 miles away in the middle of school year just to be in a school half way across town. We had to drive the boys there everyday, or the bus could come get them... at 5:15am. We had to fight the school system to get them closer.

After a couple of weeks, a spot opened up for our oldest, but not our kindergartner. After some convincing we talked the school district into letting us split up the kids to get them into a school closer to the house. Our third grader is now at the neighborhood school across the street, and an opening popped up at the school a few miles away for our 5 year old. Anything was better than the 40 minute drive, extra gas, time to get the kids back and forth to school.

Now if I can just get the kids in the same school together now...

Welcome to Florida (again!)

Well, howdy! It's been some time since I blogged. My apologies, but I must say, I've been pretty slammed with the new job and getting family moved in. Things are starting to settle some here in Florida. Things are going great! I have lots of stories to tell, so as I get back to regular posts, I'll give you the scoop as to what's been happening at the bottom of the United States. I'm not fully on the air yet, so all my readers are from previous radio stops. I can say that I miss you terribly. The life of a radio vagabond takes its toll sometimes, especially thinking about all the wonderful people I've met along the way. I hope you have a great Thanksgiving! Below are some pictures of life so far in Ft. Myers. Cheers!

The time has come. Time to say goodbye. Today is my last day at KRMD… My radio career is calling me in Florida. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the past two and a half years of fun here at KRMD.

With your help, we did some pretty awesome things… great community projects like St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Toys For Tots, Haiti… Mardi Gras!! Had some great listener appreciation concerts… with Little Big Town last week, was one of our biggest ever… To the rising of the legendary KRMD once again. You helped us become the number one rated country station for two years in a row. Thank you!

Of course I could not have done some of those great things without the help of the wonderful staff here at KRMD… from the GM’s office to the morning show, to the street team members. Thank you!

It’s been an honor to be a part of such a legendary station as KRMD. My family and I truly loved Shreveport, Bossier and the arklatex and it is difficult to leave so many great friends behind. I hope I will run into you again down the road.

Thank you for the friendship, I will never forget you. Goodbye. On the road again…

On The Road Again...

Onward and Upward...

When I got to Shreveport two and half years ago, my world changed. A new beginning, new friends... and a wild party ensued. Late nights, tequila and guitars on the back porch, and off-key karaoke.

After, the years and the beers, and all my tall radio stories told... I reached the summit. I shouted at the top saying, 'we did it!' When it hasn't been said in a long while. My friends and co-workers stood at the summit with me. I am extremely proud. Apparently, somebody heard all the shouting!

The time has come for me to make a well planned move in my career. In the coming weeks, I'll be the Program Director for WCKT in Ft. Myers/Cape Coral/Naples, Florida.

I will be forever grateful for the friends I made in a town that I love and will never forget.

I feel like if I last long enough in this biz, I figure I'll run the whole damn thing. :) Onward and upward!

Louisiana Downs hosts this every year for charity. The winner gets money donated in his/her name to their favorite charity. This is always a fun event where a bunch of radio and TV show just how out of shape they are. However, it seems I was the only out of shape radio/TV person there. I woulda done better if I wasn't racing against professional athletes! They were fast! Special thanks to Harrah's Louisiana Downs for putting this event together.

Happy Middle Child's Day!

Well, it seems there is a day for everything... A fellow 'middle child' at work alerted me that today was Middle Child's Day! Being the 2nd of three qualifies me! Did I have Middle Child Syndrome? Maybe... Did my sisters tell me I was adopted? Yes! A few times! haha! At least, I avoided the hand-me-downs since I have two sisters.

Here's a discription of the typical middle child according to Urban Dictionary.

Middle children will sometimes...
-misbehave to get attention
-go with the flow
-work as little as possible
-be less parent-dependent then their siblings
-become the 'loner' of the family, not participate in family events unless told to.
-play the peacemaker
-be more likely to go to a friend for advice than a parent
-be very creative

I match a few of those, but so could anybody really. My middle child, Mason, definitely fits many of those descriptions... Well, except for the peacemaker part... Mason's a fighter!

So, go give your middle child a special hug today! My wife said she read a survey that said one the top professions of middle children was... radio...

If you've been following the blog lately, you know I've been on a Mad Men kick. It's a TV show on AMC that I started watching in the 4th season. So I've been playing catch up via Netflix and the library. I am finally done with Season 1 and started Season 2 last night... but at the same time I am still watching Season 4 episodes... and a I'm a little bit lost. I was told that I need to stop watching Season 4 until I catch up. I think I'm going to have to do that.

Season 1 and 2 the lead character, Don Draper, is a suave creative director at an ad agency on Madison Avenue in New York... in Season 4, he seems beat down, divorced, and spinning out of control a bit... and I don't really know why.... But I'm highly addicted to the show... Maybe, it's from all the smoking and in-office booze seeping through the TV that's keeping me hooked.

Growing up in Houston, I listened to the radio constantly! Listening to my radio heroes. If you were on the radio in the mid 80's into the 90's, you were probably one of them... Eventually, wiggling my way onto the air in high school. Some of those 'DJ' songs have rung true in my life in radio: A modern day drifter, broken homes, and all those years chasing that damned ol' radio. My Heroes Have Always Been DJ's and 16 years later... I've sacrificed alot, and I wouldn't have missed a minute.

Now with over 100 years of movies in the can, it's fun to go back, especially films that look into the future...

Back on July 5th a web picture circulated that supposedly showed a crucial date for Back To The Future fans. The picture shows that the DeLorean time circuits were set to travel into the future to the date, July 5th, 2010. The picture went viral on the internet, but hold on to your flux capacitors! It was a hoax! ... I was even suckered into it and re-tweeted it to friends. Turns out the picture was photoshopped.

This was not a hoax and popped up as a trending topic yesterday on Twitter. On an episode of The Simpsons, back in 1995, an episode where Lisa has a fortune-telling wish, showing her getting married in the future ... on August 1st, 2010... yesterday!

I wonder what movies/tv shows will predict today that we will remember 15 or 25 years down the road?

Do you remember your last job interview? What were you wearing? I'm sure you looked nice, put on your best smile, and spoke clearly when answering questions from your soon-to-be boss.

But even as this economy has slowed, even good, hard working people are out of work... After today, I'm wondering if there is something more to the unemployment rate than a lack of open jobs. The radio station sponsored a job fair today and I was astounded at the appearance of a large number of the people 'looking' for a job. So, for those who need help, I came up with some tips on helping you land a job.

1) Take a bath.

2) ~~Do not wear the clothes you had on last night at the bar~~. Do not go to a bar before a job fair/interview.

3) Wear something that does not have your favorite team/wrestler/alcohol on it, or anything you wear BBQ'ing... or sweatpants with 'juicy' written on the rear.

4) You probably won't be interviewed by a company that does drug tests if you are wearing a marijuana leaf around your neck.

5) Wear something that covers the name of your baby daddy you had tattooed across your boobs.

6) If your cat slept/pissed on your clothes, wear something else.

7) Say something other than 'whaddya got for me'

8) Have a clue.

Obviously, most people already know these tips, because it's common sense! Even the poorest of people in Haiti had one nice suit/outfit to wear to church. I'm not saying you need a suit, but there is no excuse not to be somewhat presentable when trying to find a job. Easily more than half of the applicants from today's job fair were not. Laziness! ..and possibly a big cause of the nation's unemployment... nobody wants to hire a slob!

Always Late To The Party

Have you ever found out about trends and hot things going on a bit after the fact? I'm mostly ahead of the curve when it comes to internet and tech stuff, but when it comes to TV shows, I am always behind the cool kids.

People would tell me all the time how cool the Fox TV show 24 was... back in 2001!! I didn't start watching 24 until the middle of season 6. Now it's one of my all-time favorite shows... this year (season 8) was the last year... 24 was canceled. Now, I've been catching up on the old seasons with Netflix. I'm on season 2 now and really loving it! ...and it'll take me a while to catch up to where I started watching the show.

Last night, I thought I'd give the season premiere of Mad Men on AMC a shot. It's about an advertising agency, and 'other things,' as I found out! What an awesome show! I heard it was great, but just never got around to it... In fact, my first experience with Don Draper was on an SNL skit. I thought Don Draper was a character invented just for that SNL skit. I had no idea that was from a TV show, let alone Mad Men. Did I mention last night was the beginning of season 4! So yes, I'm three seasons behind. Now, I've got to find a way to catch up on the first three seasons.

Funny thing about having friends online... is that they are online. There are a bunch people I follow that I have never met in person! I got to put a face to the 'tweet' today at the Shreveport Smashburger preview. They invited a bunch of the local social media crowd to sample some of their vittles, including myself.

Got to finally meet some of my social media favs today like Kathryn Usher, saratoga, and I even got to meet some new friends. ... they probably thought I am so much cooler online than in person. (I think there is a song about that)

I had the Louisiana Burger at the Shreveport Smashburger today... It was very tasty! Bacon, cheese, grilled onions, remoulade sauce...yum! Oh... and they have sweet potato fries! Go get you some! Check out the menu. They sell beer too... but no free beer samples for me today. haha!

Country Music In The UK

I've always loved listening to radio stations around the world on the internet. Some of my favorites are Capital FM in London, ABC network in Australia, GBC radio in Gibraltar, and the BBC in the UK. After watching the movie from my last post and being a big country music fan, I went on the search for a country music radio station to listen to online in London. Nothing. I expanded my search for Country music radio stations in all of the U.K. I thought, surely, in a country of 62 million people that country music would have a spot on British airwaves somewhere! Maybe in some little British podunk town? ... None, zero, zilch! There is not one country music programmed station in all of the United Kingdom!

Many American pop artists, new and old, get lots airplay, so it can't because it's 'American music.' I was now on a mission. I contacted a European radio consultant in London and a Group Program Director for a company in Manchester to ask why. I already knew part of the answer and my radio friends reading this probably already know too. But I wanted confirmation, and in the process found out a much more in-depth reason of why there is still no country radio 'across the pond.'

The European radio consultant told me the main reason is that country music doesn't research well. That means, when surveyed, British listeners said they didn't like most country music songs. I'm not sure how long ago that research was done, but it makes sense.... radio stations here in the states do the same thing. If it doesn't research, it won't get played.

The last time at a terrestrial country station was on the air in Great Britain was 10 years ago, Country 1035am in London... right in the middle of the Garth and Shania years. (an audio recording of Garth Brooks actually introduced and launch of the station) 1035am didn't do well for a variety of reasons, but mostly for lack of a large audience, which means lack of advertisers and money to operate. I imagine being on AM didn't help along with the image of those loud, flaming Brooks and Dunn shirts from the 90's burned into the minds of the British.

Fast forward to today's country music. The flaming shirts are gone, and you can actually hear some of the country newbies like Taylor Swift and Lady Antebellum on the top 40 stations in London! Hey, why not give country radio another shot? Well, today it comes down to $$$. The group program director from Manchester says that Ofcom, (which is Britain's verision of the FCC) has to issue a license to broadcast country music, and FM licenses are no longer being issued due to the digital radio transition going on in the UK. He says the only option right now is to pony up about seven figures in British pounds (not dollars) to broadcast on the national DAB digital radio network; the British equivalent to HD Radio in the U.S.

Given the previous country radio failures, a British broadcaster is probably not going to take that risk right now, especially with advertising dollars spent on radio down lately. Basically, it still comes down to music. If country was popular like pop is in the UK, no doubt, somebody would find a way. I can't help but think that this is the most mainstream country has ever sounded and somebody should give country music another shot on British airwaves!

Not to say Country music is completely absent in the UK. Country can still be heard on a short country music program on BBC 2 radio on Thursday evenings and via internet radio.

Hmmm... now that I think about it, there's not Country radio station (non-HD channel) in New York City either... but I'll save that for another rant...

Of course, I hear they have a great country music station here.

Pirates of the Radio

It's hard to believe I've been in radio for 16 years, but I can't help to think how cool it must have been to be on the radio during the 60's when radio was king, and the DJ's were as big as movie stars. Looks like I can only relive some of the moments with stories from some of the 'old school' DJ's I know and movies.

We all know how exaggerated movies and TV can be when it comes to professions. I'm sure doctors cringe when they see shows like ER or Gray's Anatomy. But, anytime a radio movie comes out, I flock to it. Good Morning Vietnam and Howard Stern's Private Parts are my favs. I watched a little movie that didn't quite make the box office splash that they did. It's called 'Pirate Radio,' about the offshore rock n' roll radio stations in the UK... These pirate radio boats broadcasted the rock n' roll music that Britain's BBC network did not and would not play; at a time when bands like The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones made their 'invasion' here in the U.S. It was radio by the DJ's rules.

These Pirate Boat DJ's were big names and, at the time, spoke to 20 million listeners in the UK. 'Pirate Radio' certainly captured the spirit of why some radio people got into the biz... the music and girls! Ha! But, I also saw in the movie how radio probably was back in the day, where the DJ's actually picked the music for whatever mood they were in, played requests, and talked about things other than being the '12 in a row' radio station. It was big personality and music radio.

The health care debate has heated up quite a bit this week as the big health care reform bill goes for a vote this weekend. These Tea Party people have to be the most disgusting people on the planet after treating this guy the way they did just because of difference of opinion. I'd like to think that God will remember these tea baggers when their judgment day comes. I'm not sure why, but it seems humans have lost all humanity. I believe in debate, difference of opinion and freedom to protest, but this is out of line. See the video... Classy indeed!

It showed a fake organization comprised of the best-looking dudes in Hollywood. Only Jimmy was their president . . . They are pretty active too; every year I read about a couple of radio and TV stations that get popped by NFL lawyers. Now the NFL is taking on a football fan's chant, "Who Dat" and my name! Country singer and Louisiana native, Sammy Kershaw makes a stop by the studios. After running for Lt Gov. of Louisiana in 2007 and going through some personal hardships, Sammy is back with new music and a little something to make your food a taste better. Sammy scored some points and brought us some Mardi Gras King Cake from Meche's in Broussard, LA.... and if you ever want to get Sammy started, talk about duck hunting, football or driving over the speed limit. Haha! The podcast is about 15 minutes, but we talked off mic for about 45 minutes. Sammy is a great fella and was a ton of fun!
